The CGTP has issued a pre-strike notice for 3 June against changes to the labour law, after negotiations with the Government ended without an agreement.
The Government approved the proposed law to revise the labour law in the Council of Ministers, which will be discussed in parliament a week after Luís Montenegro's executive ended negotiations on changes to labour legislation without an agreement in the Social Concertation.
The 3 June strike is expected to have broad participation, with several unions from various sectors already announcing their support, namely the public service (with an emphasis on health and education), as well as transport, aviation, and commerce, among others.
At the end of the year, the CGTP and UGT decided to call a general strike for 11 December 2025, in response to the draft bill for labour law reform presented by the PSD/CDS-PP government. This was the first strike to bring together the two trade union confederations since June 2013, when Portugal was under the 'troika' intervention.
The Lisbon and Porto metros are the urban passenger transport systems where the effects of the strike will be felt earliest, as the stoppage begins today at 11 pm and at 10 pm, respectively.
The general strike scheduled for 3 June has already led to the cancellation of 153 CP trains between midnight and 4 pm today, representing 19.3% of the 791 scheduled trains, the company reported.
According to data from CP - Comboios de Portugal, 17 out of 47 scheduled long-distance trains were cancelled, while 67 out of 188 planned regional trains were cancelled.
