According to the execution project, "a new passenger building is planned, with access from both sides of the city (west-east), including an overpass over all platforms, connecting the square to the west and the new intermodal square to the east," as well as a "pedestrian walkway over the current metro line and the STCP terminal to the west."
To the east, as part of a new square to be created with the station expansion, "the construction of a new covered parking lot with 620 spaces" is included; it will be underground.
To the west, at the current main entrance to the station, there is an "intention to plant trees in the west square in front of the 20th-century station building, and to restrict traffic only to authorized vehicles, taxis, and access to the parking lot," a change from the previous project (October 2025) that was rejected, which foresaw the relocation of the taxi rank to the east and the cutting of this access to the parking lot, the closest to the current station, in favour of more exclusive space for pedestrians.
Changes to the building
For the construction of the overpass, the existing 'clock tower' to the north of the station building will be demolished to make way for the new overpass that will also function as a passenger building, aiming to connect "all the 'loose ends' that currently make up the extensive and dispersed transport interface program of Campanhã."
The new passenger building will have several floors, comprising the "station itself, with public areas, support and service provider areas, technical areas and shops", facilities of Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), an office centre, and the parking will be accessible from the new square via the new Via Corniche, planned in the Campanhã Urbanisation Plan.
Passenger shelters
Regarding passenger shelters on the boarding platforms, between lines 2 and 11, "20 closed volumes will be built (four per platform) equipped with wooden benches, to comfortably accommodate, each volume, approximately 20 passengers, protected from the elements".
Regarding the existing concrete structures, some will be maintained, and others demolished, but the current design will be preserved "in order to cover a length of 220 metres," meaning that this project does not include covering the entire platform, including access to the northern pedestrian underpass, which provides access to the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal and will be left uncovered from the elements.
Station expansion
To the east, Rua Pinheiro de Campanhã will give way to an expansion of the railway station (there will be a new platform for the new lines 10 and 11, with four lines dedicated to high-speed services), being re-established on the old Alfândega Branch line, which will enable the implementation of a "possible future sustainable mobility project" between Campanhã and Alfândega.
This is the second version of the execution project for Campanhã, since the previous one was rejected by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), and it recovers what had been presented in a video during the project's award in October 2024, with an overpass at Campanhã station and not a "naturally ventilated" overpass exposed to the elements.
Completion of works
The Porto-Lisbon high-speed rail link will place the two cities 1 hour and 15 minutes apart and may include stops in Gaia, Aveiro, Coimbra and Leiria.
It should be fully completed in 2032, as will Porto-Vigo, with stations at Porto airport, Braga, Ponte de Lima, and Valença.
