Two fishermen were identified for infractions related to the capture and sale of the fish.
According to a GNR statement, the seizure was carried out by the Coastal and Border Control Unit.
The guard inspected two vessels at the fish market facilities and detected "the landing of sardines with dimensions smaller than the minimum size legally permitted for their sale."
The seizure was made after identifying the vessel captains and license holders.
Corresponding administrative offence reports were issued, punishable by fines of up to €125,000.
The fish was deemed fit for human consumption after weighing, measuring, and sanitary inspection, and was donated to the Food Banks Against Hunger in Aveiro and Porto for social distribution.
