On 13 June, the ceremony took place in Juglinster, Luxembourg, where the Portimão delegation attended in its role as the new organisation’s official godparent confraternity. This event brought together confraternity members, guests and representatives of Luxembourg’s Portuguese community to celebrate the launch of the institution.

The creation of the Sardine Confraternity of Luxembourg represents an important step in promoting Portuguese gastronomy and cultural heritage across national borders, with the fish widely regarded as one of the country’s most iconic culinary symbols, serving as a powerful link between Portuguese communities living abroad and their homeland.

For the Portimão Sardine Gastronomic Confraternity, supporting the establishment of the new organisation was both an honour and a source of pride. The Luxembourg-based confraternity will now take on the mission of promoting sardines, Portuguese cuisine and national traditions throughout the Grand Duchy and beyond.

This visit also highlighted the strong ties between Portugal and its diaspora, with the Algarve delegation receiving a warm welcome from the Portuguese community in Luxembourg. Throughout the celebrations, participants reinforced bonds of friendship and shared cultural identity, demonstrating that geographical distance does not diminish a sense of belonging.

The launch of the Sardine Confraternity of Luxembourg opens a new chapter for Portugal’s movement and further strengthens the international profile of one of the country’s most recognisable gastronomic products.

The Portimão delegation returned to the Algarve with a sense of accomplishment, having played a crucial role in a historic occasion that has brought Portugal and Luxembourg closer together through gastronomy, culture and friendship.

More than ceremonial traditions and insignia, confraternities are ultimately defined by the people they unite, the values they promote and the connections they create.

In Luxembourg, the sardine may have provided the inspiration, but it was friendship that emerged as the event’s true legacy.
