Every late spring and early summer, the urban landscape of Lisbon transforms into a sea of vibrant violet, courtesy of the Jacaranda.
Originally imported from South America, specifically Argentina and Brazil, during the 19th century, these majestic trees found a perfect second home in the city's Mediterranean climate.
Their massive, trumpet-shaped blossoms erupt into a brilliant purple ceiling just before their green leaves appear, bathing whole neighbourhoods in an ethereal glow. And offering one of the best backgrounds for photos.
The absolute epicentre of this botanical spectacle can be experienced along the sweeping avenues of the Avenida da Liberdade and the bustling plaza of Rossio, where the purple canopy contrasts beautifully with the traditional white limestone streets.
As the blossoms eventually fall, they carpet the iconic cobblestone pavements in a delicate violet blanket. The power of colour is stunning. These trees remind us that colour is needed in life.
