In a statement, the security force declares that it “has been monitoring this criminal phenomenon with special attention”, noting “a slight downward trend in recent years”.

According to the same source, “the number of registered burglary crimes in homes (with and without forced entry/climbing)” reached 6,469 in 2024, 6,275 in 2025 and, up to 31 May of this year, 2,344.

This year, 54 suspects have already been arrested, compared to 129 in 2024 and 132 in 2025.

The GNR indicated that the districts with the highest number of occurrences in 2026 were: Faro (371), Porto (255), Lisbon (216), Setúbal (205) and Leiria (183).

Among the advice given by the GNR are "making sure that all doors, windows, gates, garages and outbuildings are properly closed and locked, avoiding leaving obvious signs of absence (accumulated mail, blinds completely closed, external lighting turned off), avoiding disclosing detailed information about trips, holidays or absences on social networks"

As well as: "keeping valuables in a safe place and keeping photographic records, serial numbers and invoices, using lighting timers to simulate presence" and "installing, whenever possible, alarm and video monitoring systems.
