Forecasts indicate that temperatures will climb well above seasonal averages, with inland areas of the Tagus Valley and Alentejo expected to record highs between 40°C and 43°C later this week. Coastal regions are also likely to experience unusually hot conditions as weaker sea breezes allow temperatures to rise more than normal.

According to IPMA, the heat is being driven by a strong high-pressure system positioned northwest of the Azores, which is drawing a mass of very warm, dry air across the Iberian Peninsula. Average temperatures are expected to remain between 3°C and 7°C above normal for the time of year.

Prolonged spell of hot weather

The prolonged spell of hot weather is also expected to bring tropical nights, with overnight temperatures remaining above 20°C in many parts of the country. These conditions can make it more difficult for people to recover from daytime heat, particularly vulnerable groups such as older adults, young children and those with underlying health conditions.

Yellow weather warnings have already been issued for several inland districts, including Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora and Beja, before expanding to additional regions as the heat intensifies. IPMA has indicated that warning levels could be upgraded if forecasts continue to deteriorate over the coming days.

Hot and dry conditions

The hot and dry conditions are also expected to increase wildfire risk across large areas of the country, particularly in inland regions where vegetation is already under stress following recent warm weather.

Health authorities recommend staying well hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, seeking shade whenever possible and checking regularly on elderly relatives, neighbours and anyone especially vulnerable to high temperatures.

If current forecasts hold, the intense heat is expected to persist for much of the week before temperatures begin to ease towards the weekend.
