A summer evening under the stars is being planned at the Porta do Mezio, one of the main entrances to Portugal's Peneda-Gerês National Park, giving visitors the chance to explore the night sky in one of the country's most scenic locations.
Taking place on 11 July, the guided stargazing session will allow participants to observe the summer sky, including the planets Jupiter and Venus, while also watching a meteor shower, weather permitting.
The event forms part of "One Sky, Eight Journeys – Summer Sky", a year-round astronomy programme organised by the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, with activities designed to encourage people to discover the night sky throughout the seasons.
According to NiT, several other astronomy events are also scheduled later this year, including a special eclipse observation in August, a Perseids meteor shower viewing night, an astrophotography workshop in September, an October stargazing session and a Geminids observation event in December.
The July event will run from 9:30 pm until midnight, with participants asked to meet at the entrance to Porta do Mezio at 9:15 pm.
Participation costs €10 per person, and advance booking is required by 10 July. Reservations can be made by emailing portadomezio@ardal.pt or calling +351 258 510 100.
