"The price of the basic food basket monitored by Deco Proteste fell for the second consecutive week and has not been this low since the first week of March. With a drop of €3.17 (down 1.23%) last week, the basic food basket now costs €253.63," says the consumer protection organisation in a statement.

The food basket includes meats, frozen foods, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, groceries, and fish.

Among others, products such as turkey, chicken, mackerel, hake, onion, potato, carrot, banana, apple, orange, rice, spaghetti, sugar, ham, milk, cheese, and butter are considered.

Between 24 July and 1 July, tuna in vegetable oil registered an 18% increase, to €1.63, onions rose 9%, to €1.64 per kilo; dried garlic registered an 8% increase to €3.41, and frankfurter sausages increased 7% to €1.82, the products with the largest price increases.

If we compare current prices with those of the first week of the year, on 7 January 2026, the largest percentage price increases were for Carolina rice (29%), black swordfish (27%), sea bream (24%), and cabbage (20%).

Since the beginning of the year, consumers have spent €11.81 less (4.88%) to buy the same basket of 63 products.

According to Deco Proteste, a year ago it was possible to buy the exact same products for €14.25 less (5.95% less).

At the beginning of 2022, it was possible to spend €65.93 less (a 35.13% difference).

Since 5 January 2022, the largest percentage increases were in beef for cooking (up 126% to €13.14 per kilo), eggs (up 84% to €2.10 per kilo), and cabbage (up 77% to €1.76 per kilo).
