In a statement, the GNR says that most of the arrests are associated with inappropriate behaviour involving fire, namely negligent use.
During this week, the GNR's deployment will focus on compliance with protection and safety measures throughout the territory, with almost the entire territory at maximum, very high, or high risk of fire.
The GNR reminds the public that, under these conditions, it is prohibited to smoke, light fires or bonfires in forest and agricultural areas, carry out burnings of leftover materials, launch rockets and balloons with lit wicks, fumigate or disinfect apiaries, unless the fumigators have spark arresters, and drive tractors, machines and heavy transport vehicles that do not have fire extinguishers and flame arresters on the exhaust pipes.
Since the beginning of the year, the GNR has already carried out 4,680 awareness-raising actions with the population and 8,549 signage actions, providing owners with the necessary advice to mitigate risks before the most critical fire months.
The device now aims to monitor compliance with safety standards in the field, reducing the risk of rural ignitions and ensuring a "robust response" in the prevention, surveillance, and early detection of rural fires, thereby protecting populations and the national forest heritage.
Despite the device's full readiness and surveillance capacity, the GNR warns that the success of prevention depends on each citizen's responsible behaviour and respect for the protection measures in place.
For clarification of doubts or to report rural and environmental infractions, the GNR reminds citizens that they can contact the SOS Environment and Territory Hotline (808 200 520).

The definition of an arsonist is someone who deliberately sets fire to any kind of property so therefore the title is somewhat misleading

They are detaining predominantly mentally compromised individuals unable to defend themselves so politicians can keep blaming alleged arsonists for major negligence and lack of public investment, very notorious in Portugal when compared to other European countries.
