The country has now been included in Travel and Tour World's Top 50 Medical Tourism Destinations in the World 2026, where it appears in 25th place.

The ranking highlights Portugal's growing reputation as a destination for medical tourism, recognising the country's high-quality healthcare services, internationally accredited hospitals, specialised treatments and increasing appeal to international patients looking for reliable, accessible and cost-effective medical care.

According to TTW, Portugal has become increasingly competitive in the global medical tourism market thanks to its combination of experienced healthcare professionals, modern medical facilities and treatment options that offer good value for money. The country's climate, safety and quality of life also make it an attractive place for patients to recover after undergoing medical procedures.

Medical fields

Among the medical fields where Portugal stands out are fertility and reproductive medicine, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, orthopaedics, cardiology, oncology, dentistry, ophthalmology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as wellness and recovery programmes.

The report identifies Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Braga, Faro, Funchal, Aveiro, Cascais, Setúbal and Évora as the Portuguese cities offering the strongest medical tourism services.

International presence

Portugal has also continued to strengthen its international presence through the Medical Tourism in Portugal platform. The initiative, developed by the Health Cluster Portugal in partnership with AICEP, Turismo de Portugal and the Portuguese Association of Private Hospitals (APHP), promotes the country's healthcare services to international patients.

The platform has recently expanded its offering by adding dentistry, joining the eight medical specialities already available since the project was launched.

The Top 50 Medical Tourism Destinations in the World 2026 ranking is compiled by Travel and Tour World, an international travel and tourism platform that evaluates destinations based on the quality of their medical tourism offering and their international visibility.
