The document stipulates the application of a tourist tax of 1 euro per night of stay in all tourist accommodation units in the municipality of Nazaré, including hotels, hostels, local accommodation and other forms of lodging.

According to the Nazaré City Council, "the tax will be applied from 1 September" to guests who stay overnight in the municipality of Nazaré, in the district of Leiria, provided they are over 12 years old.

Collection of the amount

Exempt from the amount, which will be charged for up to five consecutive days, are those over 65 years of age, people with disabilities and people who become ill during their stay in Nazaré.

In the regulation, the City Council justifies implementing the fee with "the increased pressure on public infrastructure and on the provision of municipal services" caused by tourism, specifically in the areas of "urban cleaning, maintenance of public space and reinforcement of the security of people and property".

According to data from Turismo de Portugal, in 2025 the number of overnight stays in the municipality of Nazaré totalled 248,981.

According to the text published in the Official Gazette on 3 July, the regulation comes into force on the first day of the month following this publication, with the express exclusion of reservations demonstrably made before this date for the year 2026.

On the same day, the Municipal Regulation for Sustainable Management of Local Accommodation (AL) in Nazaré was also published, which defines the containment areas and the areas of sustainable growth for this activity.

The regulation, which comes into effect on 1 August, aims to direct the growth of short-term rentals "preferably towards the use of properties not dedicated to permanent housing, whether vacant or dilapidated, or holiday homes that have never been, nor are expected to be, part of the permanent housing stock."
