A video sent to The Portugal News by a reader shows the arrivals area at the airport, which shows a calm scene, with travellers moving through passport control without significant delays. Passengers were able to complete the entire process, from entering passport control to clearing the area, in approximately 15 minutes.

The successful operation comes as airports across Europe continue preparations for the introduction of the European Union’s new EES border management system, designed to digitally record the entry and exit of non-EU nationals.

At Faro Airport, the automated EES machines were fully operational during the afternoon arrivals period, allowing eligible passengers to use the new technology without disruption. The absence of queues provided a positive experience for travellers arriving in the Algarve during the busy summer travel season.

Passengers leaving the arrivals area were able to continue their journeys quickly, with no visible congestion around passport control.

Faro Airport is one of Portugal’s busiest international gateways, welcoming millions of visitors each year, particularly during the peak holiday months when tourists from across Europe arrive in the Algarve.

Today’s smooth 3pm arrivals period will be welcomed by travellers and tourism operators who have been watching closely how the new border procedures affect passenger flows.
