The inventory study of nocturnal butterflies in the municipality of Loulé comes as a result of a local strategy aimed at "promoting and disseminating scientific knowledge of the territory." In a press release, the municipality also reveals that there was greater interest in conducting this study in the "protected areas of the municipality," a result that combines the work of "two years of sampling," which has been transformed into a scientific article.

This study follows the City Hall's strategy to promote and disseminate scientific knowledge of the territory, with a special focus on the municipality's protected areas, and includes the results of two years of sampling (2024 and 2025), now presented as a scientific article.

“Trafal, Ameixial, Fonte da Benémola, Lagoa da Nave, Rocha da Pena, Ancão, Vale Telheiro, Cerro de Cabeça de Câmara and Ludo were the areas where the species that will now be incorporated into the country's fauna were recorded”, as mentioned in the press release.

After the results of the study and based on bibliographic data, 926 species of nocturnal butterflies inhabit the Municipality of Loulé, "which represents more than a third of the known species in mainland Portugal."

The article is published in the Bulletin of the Spanish Entomological Association.
