The analysis evaluated Google search volumes for seven specific activities: surfing, diving, kayaking, sailing, snorkelling, windsurfing, and kitesurfing, across a pool of over 500 European islands.
The final results ranked the top 25 islands generating the most interest among active tourism enthusiasts; Madeira secured a spot on the podium, trailing only Malta (which topped the list) and Tenerife (which took second place).
According to the platform's findings, Madeira stands out for its excellent year-round surfing conditions, benefiting from mild water temperatures ranging between 18°C and 24°C.
Additionally, the archipelago excels in snorkelling, boasting sites of high ecological value, such as the Ponta de São Lourenço Nature Reserve, where the coastal area's unique geology enhances opportunities to observe distinct marine species, making excursions in the area highly recommended.
Other recognised nations
At the top of the list, Malta solidified its lead with over 157,000 search engine queries, driven primarily by strong interest in scuba diving.
The Mediterranean destination stands out for its crystal-clear waters and vast array of dive sites, with depths ranging from 5 to 60 meters, allowing divers to explore reefs, natural caves, and historic shipwrecks. The Ċirkewwa area is cited as one of the most popular spots.
Meanwhile, the island of Tenerife, in second place, benefits from a consistently temperate climate and a wide variety of surf beaches suitable for surfers of all skill levels.
The Spanish island also excels in snorkelling and diving within biodiversity-rich volcanic landscapes, particularly at sites such as Abades Bay and Montaña Amarilla.
Rounding out the top 10 of this European ranking are the islands of Lanzarote, Mallorca, Fuerteventura, Crete, Sardinia, Ibiza, and Cyprus, highlighting the continent's diverse options for those seeking to combine seaside experiences with nature-based activities.
