The project upgraded the airbase to international Category F standards, enabling the aircraft, expected to become the next Air Force One, to land safely during the 2026 NATO summit, where the jet was displayed.

The overhaul included extending and widening the runway, strengthening pavement, upgrading taxiways, lighting and navigation systems, and expanding aircraft parking areas. The Boeing 747-8 measures more than 76 metres in length and can weigh up to 442 tonnes at take-off, requiring specialised airport infrastructure beyond the capabilities of many existing military airfields.
