When this tunnel came into service on 17 September 2005, trains first ran only between Câmara de Gaia (south of the Douro) and Pólo Universitário (north), making Aliados one of the key downtown stops linking Porto’s historic centre to both sides of the river.

The project design dates from 2001, with construction carried out between 2004 and 2005 as part of the large first phase of the metro system. It sits just south of City Hall and is followed by Trindade station to the north (the main interchange) and São Bento station to the south (the historic railway terminus), forming the central trio of stops that today define Porto’s Metro.
