40 people evacuated in Monchique wildfire

Close to 300 fire-fighters are tackling a huge blaze on the northern border of the Monchique mountain range in the Algarve, and 40 people have been evacuated as the flames encroached on their village.

The blaze was reported at approximately 1.30pm, and is on the border with the Alentejo town of Odeceixe, in the parish of Perna da Negra. 79 vehicles and nine aircraft are also helping fight the fire.
