Paulo Costa from GlobalSport told Lusa news agency that it is their aim for the event to obtain a gold classification from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in the future.
“This event has everything to become one of the largest in Europe, thanks to the marathons proximity to airports, to Spain and due to the favourable climate,” said Paulo Costa.
The godmother of the first edition of the Marathon of Europe is Aurora Cunha, one of the best Portuguese athletes of all time, three times world champion and winner of some of the biggest and most prestigious marathons on the planet: Paris, Tokyo, Chicago and Rotterdam.
The European Marathon is co-organised and supported of the City Council of Aveiro, and is supported by Turismo do Centro. The organisation of the event is headed by GlobalSport, the company responsible for sports projects such as the EDP Running Wonders, circuit of half marathons in World Heritage places in athletics, and the Grande Prémio de Portugal Nacional 2 in cycling.
