The State Secretary for Infrastructures, Transport and Communications, Sérgio Silva Monteiro, was in attendance at the signing ceremony last Friday, 31 July.

In comments to Lusa News Agency, Beja councillor Manuel Oliveira said that the investment was important to developing the airport and the region.

The €33 million redevelopment of the former military airbase opened in April 2011 but still sees very little to no traffic on most days.

The project that AeroNeo is to develop at Beja’s civil terminal is based on the GreenParts 95 concept, which aims to enhance the value of aircraft assets through “the comprehensive management of end-of-life aircraft in which the maintenance, dismantling, re-use and recycling are seen as integrated chain links, in compliance with the best environmental practices.”

Around 8 million euros will be invested in the new plant, which will cover 7,500 square metres and could create up to 80 direct jobs.
AeroNeo forecasts sustainable growth for the industrial unit, which expects to dismantle five aircraft in the first year and up to 18 in the fourth year, when it predicts a turnover of over 32 million euros.

The models more commonly dismantled are the Airbus 319-320 and Boeing 737.

The unit, which is expected to become fully operational within three years, aims to meet the demand for solutions in a growing market, and forecasts that about 12,500 aircraft will be phased out of operation in the next 15 years.

This structuring project, which will have a significant impact on the Alentejo region, proves the effectiveness of the industrial strategy that ANA has continuously invested in with a view to the sustained development of Beja airport and the region it serves.
