“Not only is the Algarve a must-see place for the amateur golfer, but it has attracted the best professionals in the world, thanks to the diversity and renowned quality of the 40 golf courses and the renowned hospitality and professionalism of the region’s agents”, congratulated the president of the Algarve Tourism Region, João Fernandes.

Quoted in a statement from the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA), João Fernandes said that “golf days in the Algarve remain in the memory of golfers, even after the end of their holidays”, as the region also offers visitors, he noted, “history, tradition, good weather, nature and good cuisine”.

“And [the Algarve] is also something that cannot be explained ... Just visit! Therefore, we hope to receive lovers of the sport very soon! We invite you all to the Algarve, when the Portugal Masters 2019 (European Tour event) will be held, which this year will take place from 23 to 27 October in Vilamoura,” said the president of the Algarve Tourism Region.

ATA clarified that the choice of the Algarve as the best golf destination for 2020 was made by IAGTO, “which represents the global golf tourism industry in the context of the 20th edition of the IAGTO Awards”, in a “vote that counted more than 700 tour operators, specialised in this industry and from over 60 different countries.”

“The Algarve has stood out as a favourite when it comes to offering the best experience for golfers, beating a number of other world class golf destinations,” added the ATA, stressing that this is “the third time the Algarve is distinguished by IAGTO” after the region won the title of best golf destination in Europe in 2006 and 2014.

ATA stressed that “the Algarve regains the preference of specialised operators, but now globally”, due to factors such as “the quality and diversity of the infrastructures that the Algarve offers for golf practice, the ease of access to the destination through frequent connections to Faro airport and value for money ”.

“Added to this are other arguments such as the wide selection of accommodation options, the natural beauty of the region, the good weather that allows golf to be played all year round and the huge variety of attractions and additional motivations that make it possible to enrich the players visiting the region, with family and friends,” he added.

IAGTO President, Peter Walton noted that “the Algarve has always put the experience of golf visitors at the top of its agenda” and took the opportunity to “congratulate all golf courses, hotels and suppliers in the area of golf tourism in the region” for the distinction, which he described as an “extraordinary achievement ”.
