The Algarve has seen a 15 percent drop in the use of bank cards this summer, according to the entity responsible for managing the Multibanco ATM network, SIBS.

However, Lisbon and Porto experienced even greater drops.

SIBS said global consumption in Portugal through bank card operations fell by 9%, mainly affected by the reduction in foreign tourism. And cards were used more in the interior regions than along the coast.

So many tourist places are cash only in the Algarve. No NIF, no fatura / invoices since tourists don't need them. So guess how much Finanças ie the tax man is getting from them!
