According to Luís Pesca, director of the National Federation of Unions of Civil and Social Service Workers, ambulance crews and workers in emergency health centres are to walk out and hold a demonstration in Lisbon on the same day. He said the union believes the ministry has been trying to trick these workers.

"INEM workers demanded a career, there was a commitment on the part of the Ministry of Health to revise and negotiate the career and, regrettably, last week the assistant secretary of state for health informed us that this career would not see the light of day in this parliament," Pesca told Lusa.

The strike comes two and a half weeks before the general election, which is scheduled for 4 October.
