In the second leg of their third-round tie, which took place on Wednesday night, the Portuguese national champions won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19 – results that already guaranteed them passage into the group state – before losing 25-20 and closing the match with a 25-21 win.

After their 3-0 win at home at the Luz stadium in Lisbon, Benfica only needed one point, which they guaranteed by winning the first two sets. If they had lost a ‘golden set’ would have been necessary to determine which of the two teams would go through.

Benfica’s men’s volleyball team remain undefeated this season in all competitions.

The Champions League is organised by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV).
