The referendum date must now be agreed by both Houses of Parliament.
Nonetheless, information sent to The Portugal News from the British Embassy in Lisbon explained that while the final deadline for registering to vote “which is set out in law and applies to overseas and UK resident voters alike” is 12 working days before polling day, “overseas voters are always encouraged to register to vote as soon as possible, and not to leave it to the last minute.”
The registration process is a relatively quick and straightforward online process.
Overseas voters will also need to apply for a postal or proxy vote too.
The Embassy recommends that British nationals overseas monitor The Electoral Commission website (www.electoralcommission.org.uk) for updates and about plans to encourage overseas voters to apply to register to vote.
