While visiting her son in the Algarve Joan Edith Whitehorn, 84, started to gag while eating pork chops. Although she could breathe well, the octogenarian was still taken to the Portimão A&E, where she was told she would have to wait up to ten hours before seeing a specialist.

Since the family was bound to return to the UK the next day, it was decided that they would head to the airport instead.

According to reports, upon arrival, Joan went to the Princess Royal University Hospital, where doctors found and surgically removed a bone lodged in her throat.

The pensioner has since fully recovered.
