In a statement, Movement Schools Without Asbestos and the environmental association Zero welcomed the announcement made last month by António Costa, when he announced “a major operation to eliminate asbestos in schools”, now that schools are closed because of the pandemic.

This was the intention of the two organisations, which had already asked a month ago to take advantage of the closing period of face-to-face classes to completely end asbestos in public school buildings.

The MESA coordinator, André Julião, considered in a statement that “it is healthy” the intention expressed by the Prime Minister when announcing the measure, but stressed that it is necessary “to disclose the updated list of schools with asbestos, their classification by priorities and the removal works calendar, with start and end dates”.

The architect at Zero Íris Madeira stated that "it does not make sense to continue talking about this topic and that there is no list of buildings with asbestos".
