"Along with criminal accountability, through the application of a penalty, the fight should also focus on the accountability of assets, focusing on the intensification of mechanisms to recover any assets illicitly obtained with the practice of crime," Lucília Gago said in a written statement sent to Lusa news agency.

Gago’s opinion is shared by the government that advocates an intervention in the area of widespread loss and an investment in mechanisms to capture the product illegally obtained through economic and financial crime.

She guaranteed to be strongly committed to this matter and announced that in March 2020, a national project will be implemented "which includes a training component aimed at prosecutors aimed at increasing their capacity in this area".

Continuing and deepening the fight against corruption remains at the forefront of the public prosecutor's concerns.

The attorney general added that the enormous complexity and sophistication of economic and financial crime "requires a particular demand and specificity in investigations" and the fight "needs a qualified and rapid response at the level of computer and accounting and financial expertise, able to give greater efficiency and promptness to investigations".
