An analysis of the tables of the General Directorate of Education and Science (DGEEC), by country of origin, shows that Chinese pupils come mainly to study languages, law and management and administration, at various levels: undergraduate, master and doctorate.

Between 2011 and 2019, there were 6,568 registrations of Chinese pupils at universities and polytechnics in Portugal, according to data from the National Access Competition (CNA), available at DGEEC.

Lisbon had the highest number of student enrolments in the total for the period under analysis (3,820), followed by Aveiro (710), Braga (523), Coimbra (446) and Porto (434).

These figures include the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR).

The vast majority (85%) of Chinese pupils attend or have attended public education throughout this period: 5,606 pupils. The private sector absorbed 962 pupils.

Universities received 5,915 pupils (90.1%) and polytechnics 653 (9.9%).
