This was Ronaldo’s fifth individual FIFA award with Portugal’s captain scoring forty-four goals in forty-eight appearances; thirty-three for Real Madrid and eleven for his country.
The ceremony took place at the Palladium Theatre, London.
Lieke Martens of Barcelona and the Netherlands won best female player, Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane was named best men’s coach and Netherlands’ Sarina Wiegman, the best female coach.
Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud received the Puskas Award for the best goal of 2017 for his ‘scorpion kick’ against Crystal Palace in January. Glasgow Celtic won the Fans Award after they honoured the club’s 1967 ‘Lisbon Lions’ with a stunning 360-degree card display on the 50th anniversary of their historic European Cup win.
The event was attended by a host of stars past and present, including Diego Maradona, former Brazil striker Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Sergio Ramos and Harry Kane, with winners decided by a jury of club and international coaches, media representatives and fans.
Ronaldo’s triumph stole the show as the 32-year-old received recognition for another stellar year in which he won both the Champions League and LaLiga with Real Madrid.
