Emergency doctors at the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada have already amassed more than 300 hours of overtime this year, twice the maximum permitted by law, according to the Association of Doctors.

The President of the Association wrote to the directors of the hospital to express his "deep concern" about the position of the heads of the emergency department and the specialists of internal medicine who had written to the Association to express their indignation "at the critical situation they are living in their respective services", saying that they are "at the limit of their capacity to respond”.

"The doctors themselves are aware of the risk that this situation represents for the patients".

For the Association, the situation reported by internal medicine doctors and emergency chiefs is not unrelated to that of the paediatric emergency unit which has to close temporarily for some periods at night.
