Despite the cooler and cloudy conditions, the Portuguese Met Office says there remains an extreme risk of fires in Tavira, São Brás de Alportel, Alcoutim and Castro Marim.

Advisories have also been issued for Loulé and Faro, where firefighters have been placed on the second highest level of alert.

Overall, more than half of the country is on a reduced risk of fires due to rainfall and cool temperatures recorded in recent days in northern and central Portugal.
