Exports and imports both record strong increases

Portuguese exports rose 10 percent and imports rose 13.1 percent in 2017 compared to 2016, reaching historical levels, the country’s national statistics institute (INE) said earlier this week.

According to the INE’s provisional data for international trade in 2017, exports of goods totalled €55.029 billion and imports of goods totalled €69,489 million.
The commercial trade of goods saw a negative balance of €14,460 million, representing a rise in the deficit of €3,075 million compared to the previous year.

Excluding fuels and lubricants, exports rose 8.9 percent and imports grew by 11.4 percent. The deficit rose by €2.125 billion.
