A Portuguese 'Canadair' plane crashed on 8 August during fire fighting in the Peneda Gerês National Park, in Lindoso, Viana do Castelo district, causing one death and one serious injury.

One of the 65-year-old Portuguese pilots died on the spot, despite attempts by members of the National Institute of Medical Emergency, while the second, 39-year-old Spanish pilot was assisted on the spot and transported in "serious condition" to the Hospital of Viana do Castelo.

The amphibious plane, which was part of the Special Rural Fire Fighting Device, crashed near the Alto do Lindoso Dam, already in Spanish territory, after a 'scooping' operation (replenishing the water tank).
