Fires – 121 fire-fighters injured battling wildfires in the past fortnight

More than 120 men and women belonging to the country’s fire-brigades, who are tirelessly tackling the relentless summer wildfires throughout the country, have been injured in their efforts.

These figures mean firefighters make up the majority of victims caused by blazes.
Data from the National Civil Protection Authority showed that since 11 August and to going to press, 152 people had been injured in fires, 121 of whom were fire-fighters.
Since the beginning of this month, close to 3,000 wildfires have been registered, with 286 fires being registered last Sunday alone.

With over two weeks still to go before the most critical fire period is officially over, the nation’s firefighters are exhausted, but still giving their all to keep on top of the ever-arising situations.
It is hoped that showers forecast for next week come through, and might offer some brief but essential respite.
This year has been the worst in a decade for forest fires in Portugal, with many blazes believed by residents to have been started deliberately.
To date, 73 arsonists have been detained so far this year.
