Fires continue to test country’s resources and resilience

Portugal’s fire-fighters continue to battle a large number of forest fires on mainland Portugal, some which have been raging since Monday.

Around 3,000 firemen and woman are tackling some 123 wildfires, the largest of which, in Arouca, last night travelled 15 kilometres. Twelve of the fires are of large dimensions.

In Madeira hundreds of people were put up in shelters last night as the flames continued to test local resources.

One hotel and around 150 homes have been destroyed by the fires on the island.

Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has offered to help the region financially in its recovery.

I am from Ottawa Canada
My husband and I are coming to your beautiful Maderia Island next month September 15. We have been so looking forward to celebrating our 25th wedding Anniversary. We pray for all people on the island and that God protects you all from further destruction.
If when we are there, if there is anything we could help with we will lend a hand.
