Overall, eighteen kilometres of riverbank are to be regenerated.
“We have 18 kilometres of riverbank that we want to rehabilitate as we have done in the past with the coastline,” explained Patrocínio Miguel Vieira Azevedo, the deputy-mayor of Gaia Council, adding that a bid to have the Douro Riversides classified as protected landscape is already in the planning.
So far around one kilometre, along the Areinho de Oliveira do Douro area, has been worked on and completed. Interventions include a bicycle path, new walkways and the improvement of basic infrastructures such as illumination and telecommunications.
