Five cyclists injured daily in collisions

Since the introduction of new legislation aimed at affording greater protection to people using bicycles, an average of five cyclists is injured in traffic collisions each day on Portuguese roads.

According the National Road Safety Authority, 1,070 cyclists were involved in accidents during the first half of last year.

Associations representing cyclists have meanwhile questioned the effectiveness of new legislation, saying that motorists are seldom fined for breaking the stricter laws, which include a stipulation that drivers should leave a space of 1.5 metres between them a cyclist when overtaking or refrain from doing so.
