Floods and landslides on São Miguel island

The intense rain that fell on Sunday, 2 February, in the eastern group of the Azores flooded roads and caused the embankments to collapse on São Miguel, the largest island of the archipelago, a source of Civil Protection told Lusa.

According to the source, the Regional Service of Civil Protection and Firefighters of the Azores (SRPCBA) recorded seven occurrences in the municipalities of Ponta Delgada (two) and Ribeira Grande (five), all related to the heavy rainfall recorded on Sunday.

Three public roads were flooded, one house was flooded and a tree fell down but there were also landslides and the obstruction of part a highway in the Northeast, due to landslides, were the situations seen by the SRPCBA.

Besides the voluntary firemen of Ponta Delgada and Ribeira Grande, members of the Regional Directorate of Public Works and Communications were also involved in cleaning and clearing the roads.
