Food bank helps feed 18,273 in Lisbon

Some 6,700 households and 18,273 citizens received support from the food bank Banco Alimentar during 2014, the Observatory on the Fight Against Poverty in the City of Lisbon, reported Monday.

This figure was slightly down on 2013 when a total of 18,394 persons were in receipt of food aid even while still sharply up on 2012, 17,630 persons, and 2011, 15,182 persons.

The largest number of households is located in the upmarket and residentially expensive parish of Estrela, with 757 households in receipt out of a total of 2,105 households, whilst the more outlying Olivais, comes second with 545 households out of a total of 1,638.

Banco Alimentar collects foodstuffs direct from shoppers on several different occasions over the year and runs an extensive volunteer network for such purposes.
