In a statement released on 13 April, the National Republican Guard specifies that the nucleus of dangerous materials in the Emergency Protection and Relief Unit (UEPS) of GNR is a structure that integrates about 60 military personnel "highly specialized" in dangerous materials and NRBQ (nuclear agents) , radiological, biological and chemical).

According to GNR, this nucleus of dangerous materials has decontaminated more than 1000 ambulances and 30 facilities since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic.

Within the scope of intervention in facilities, this special nucleus has been used daily for the decontamination of hospital establishments, private institutions of social solidarity, nursing homes, day-care centres, day centres, in addition to facilities and vehicles of the GNR itself.

This security force also underlines that two decontamination lines exclusively for ambulances and emergency medical vehicles and resuscitation of the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM), the Portuguese Red Cross and the Fire Department are operating around the clock in Lisbon and Porto, from all over the country, with an average daily decontamination of 50 vehicles.
