GNR registers 418 accidents and one dead in the first two days of the Carnival operation

GNR recorded 418 road accidents and a fatal victim in the first two days of the “Carnival 2020” operation, which started on Friday, 21 February, the operations officer in charge of the general command told Lusa.

According to the National Republican Guard, on 21 and 22 February, the first two days of the “Carnival 2020" operation, there were 418 accidents, which resulted in one death, 11 serious injuries and 135 minor injuries.

The operations officer in the general command of the GNR stated that the provisional data is until midnight on 22 February, but throughout Sunday, 23 February, there have been no fatalities in the area of ??surveillance of this security force.

GNR intensified the patrolling and inspection on Portuguese roads in order to “combat road accidents, regulate traffic and guarantee support to all road users, providing them with safe travel” during the Carnival.

During the “Carnival 2020” operation, the GNR military directs inspection actions for driving under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic substances, speeding, lack of legal clearance and dangerous manoeuvres, especially with regard to overtaking, changing direction and transfer of passage.

The incorrect or not use of the seat belt or child seats and overcrowding are other infractions that are being monitored in this operation, which ends on Tuesday, 25 February.
