Maria do Céu Albuquerque was visiting a farm in the district of Vila Real, which was affected by the Elsa and Fabien depressions that hit the country in December.

One of the funds, with €2 million available, aims to support farmers for the damage caused by the floods, particularly in the Mondego valley.

"The second, with €9 million available, for the central and northern regions hit by the December depressions.

Young farmer Vera Pinto told reporters that the strong wind blew the plastic coverings out of eight of a total of 11 greenhouses, causing damage worth "about €30,000.

She said the main product grown is green beans that she exports to Spain.

"It's going to be very difficult to recover from this. It was like a pandemonium, a lot of rain and a lot of wind. This is the third time it's happened to us. Right now, if we don't get some kind of support we're going to have to give up," she said.

Maria do Céu Albuquerque explained that farmers will have to apply for subsidies and check the eligibility conditions of losses.

She believes €11 million to be "sufficient" to "cover the losses that occurred in these two depressions".
