Minister João Gomes Cravinho said that measures are “already underway” to reverse the “disinvestment cycle” in the Armed Forces, admitting the urgency of guaranteeing personnel for missions.

It is necessary to “understand the expectations of those who are part of the armed forces and to maximise their skills for the service of all Portuguese.
On the other hand, he said, it is necessary to “raise the awareness of the Portuguese” by making them aware of the reality of military life and valuing the armed forces actions.
The governor was speaking during a swearing in ceremony at the Centre for Military and Air Force Training in Ota, Alenquer, in the district of Lisbon, chaired by the President of the Republic.

At the ceremony, the President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted the importance of the Armed Forces’ mission to “save and perpetuate” Portugal.
The President of the Armed Forces Officers Association, António Mota, warned that the number of military personnel registered in the third quarter of the year is the lowest of
the decade, at 25,580 in September, the lowest number recorded
since 2011.
