The Minister for the Environment has unveiled a pilot-project that sees the placement of fifty plastic-bottle collection machines. The new equipment will be placed across markets, shopping centres, supermarkets and universities.

The project is aimed at creating an incentive system based on giving rewards to consumers who display ‘environmentally responsible behaviour’. The Government will present the machines’ performance assessment to Parliament at the end of the third trimester of 2021.

The project comes after the European Commission set recycling targets at a minimum of 77 percent of single use bottles until 2025, to be increased to 90 percent by 2019.
