The governments of Portugal and Spain are to meet today (Thursday) in Madrid, after officials in Lisbon said on Wednesday they had received guarantees that the final decision on the planned construction of a nuclear waste storage facility in Almaraz has not been taken.

An official at the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment also confirmed the meeting to Lusa. The meeting has been scheduled for 11.30am local time (10.30am Lisbon time), according to the same sources.

At issue is the decision by Spain's government - contested by Portugal - to build a nuclear waste storage facility at Almaraz, about 100 kilometres from the frontier.
