GNR detected fishermen with smaller than authorised sardines in the fishing port of Sesimbra before making the seizure.

The sardines in question all measured between 12cm and 15cm in length. This sized sardine is prohibited from being fished on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as part of laws to guarantee the sustainability of the species.

The 42 year old master of the fishing vessel was identified by police and could now face a fine up to €50,000.

The seized fish were all donated to social solidarity institutions.
