Health authorities are studying the deaths of patients with covid-19 that occurred at home or in institutions and investigating the circumstances in which they occurred, said the director-general of Health.

"It is a phenomenon that we are evaluating and studying and it is not indifferent to the desire that some people have to die at home, whether from covid or any other reason for death," said Graça Freitas, at the daily update press conference data from the covid-19 pandemic.

Therefore, she stressed, “apart from this circumstance, obviously”, the places where the most cases occurred are being investigated.

According to Graça, Freitas, the number of cases is “relatively small”. However, she stressed: "We know it exists and that we have to investigate what is derived from their own will and what may be derived from other types of factors".

The director-general of Health noted that people who are in institutions and at home infected with the new coronavirus or other pathologies - many of these people have other diseases - are being monitored by medical and nursing teams from their health units.

Questioned at the press conference on the use of surgical masks by the population, including by deputies and members of the Government, when the recommendation of the DGS is to reserve them for patients and health professionals, Graça Freitas explained that they are wearing them because “the market has the capacity to supply”.

“Effectively the use of surgical masks [by the population] cannot compromise the need for greater use by health professionals, by patients, within health institutions and by other professionals”, but “people are using it because the market has capacity to supply,” she said.

According to Graça Freitas, Portuqal is managing to acquire to supply the market, but "anytime this does not happen obviously people who are wearing surgical masks will have to use other types of equipment".

For Graça Freitas, it is a question of market balance: “Right now we are managing to supply the health system market and other priority sectors for our country, but let it be clear that there can never be a shortage in these most important sectors.”
