Infarmed bans Chinese rapid HIV test

Portugal’s medicine agency Infarmed said on Wednesday that it has banned the Chinese manufacturer Zhuhai Encode Medical Engineering’s HIV rapid self-test from the domestic market for non-compliance with the European directive.

Although this medical device is not on sale in Portugal, Infarmed points out that there is free movement of products in the European Economic Area and that the product, which did not bear the CE marking, was sold on the internet.

In addition to recommending that this product not be used, Infarmed also requests that the existence of this rapid test be reported to the health product management of the regulator.

The failure was detected as part of surveillance by the competent Swedish authority.
