Inter-rail losing out to low cost airlines

Inter-rail ticket sales have dropped in Portugal in recent years as more young travellers opt to explore Europe with low-cost airlines.

Portugal was one of the 21 countries that signed up to the Inter-rail project in 1972 when it was launched.

In 2007 another nine countries were added to the project to try and make it more appealing but, figures from national rail company CP show that while in 2010 3,233 Inter-rail passes were sold in Portugal, last year 2,243 were sold.
